Materials might include academic or popular texts, visual culture (film, artwork, websites), audio culture (music, podcasts, audio art), objects and experiences (from architecture, to memorials or public spectacles). It is expected that the material will be timely (generally, created within the last three years).

If you'd like to address something outside of these criteria, we will soon create a "Reviewer Resource Library" on this wiki, where anyone is free to submit summaries, reviews or responses to classic, historical texts and other materials. These submissions, however, will not be eligible for publication in NeoAmericanist.

I'D LIKE TO REVIEW SOMETHING, BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Potential reviewers should survey the list of new materials that have come to the attention of the NeoAmericanist Review Office (see Available for Review link on left). These lists are regularly updated. Once you've identified an item you would like to review, notify the NeoAmericanist Review Office ( neoamericanist.reviews [at] mail [dot] com ) of the piece you are interested in (cut and paste the full listing from the wiki page, please - including the publisher and ISBN), and your qualifications to review the piece (simply tell us what kind of skills and special knowledge of the topic you offer). A Review Officer will then contact you and, if your proposal is accepted, arrange for delivery of the requested materials (at no charge to you!).

The time-line for completion of this type of review will be negotiated when the reviewer contacts NA or when they are solicited. The journal encourages reviewers to work quickly, however, as we try to include the piece in the publication as soon as possible. The average turn around time for a review is about 4-6 months from the time a piece is commissioned through the reviews office--times can vary, however, depending on publisher mailing time, etc.

Reviews in this stream are submitted through the publication portal and are earmarked by editorial staff as a commissioned work.

MAY I SUBMIT AN 'UNREQUESTED' REVIEW TO THE NEOAMERICANIST?
Yes. This can be a book review of a book you have on your bookshelf, or a broader review essay that tackles a series of books linked by themes, eras or issues. We do ask, however, that you respect our format requirements for reviews.

DOES THE NEOAMERICANIST HAVE ANY FORMAT REQUIREMENTS (LENGTH, ETC.) FOR REVIEWS?
Reviews must meet the basic submission guidelines outlined on the website (http://neoamericanist.org/submissions.html#summary).

HOW DO I SUBMIT A REVIEW?
Reviews can be submitted directly to the publication through our submission portal (http://neoamericanist.org/forms.aspx).
These works will be assessed by editors for writing, relevancy and thoroughness.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE MY REVIEW IS ACCEPTED BY THE NEOAMERICANIST?
Once accepted, reviewers will be sent and asked to sign an electronic publication agreement that gives the journal exclusive rights to the publication of the review. Permission to reprint or republish any work that is printed in NeoAmericanist must be done so with the explicit and written consent of the journal's editorial staff.

All reviews, whether 'unrequested' or 'commissioned', are subject to equal editorial scrutiny and the journal will work closely with authors to meet basic revisions.

CAN ANYONE REVIEW A WORK?
Anyone can review a work - students, faculty, post-grads, non-academics - anyone. Reviews are assessed according to academic standards, however, and priority is always given to students.

Available for Review

Each of the threads on this page corresponds to a particular field of interest related to study of the United States. These are texts that often get assigned in course readings, and which Masters and Doctoral degree candidates are expected to have read, and to know well. As graduate students, we know the frustrations and challenges these texts can pose, for graduates, undergraduates, and lay readers alike.

We offer this section of the site as a resource for reviewers, and those who aspire to write for the journal. Here you can write a short (or long) summary, review or response to a book, journal article, or other materials that you regard as key to understanding some aspect of American Studies. These summaries will not be considered for publication in the NeoAmericanist.

For the sake of generating meaningful discussion, and responses from other readers, we ask that your summaries be at least 250 words, and simply address any aspect of an American Studies text/journal article at least ten years old (particularly 'classic' texts such as those that usually end up on syllabi and in PhD 'field' reading lists). NOTE: Summaries that do not meet the basic criteria for academic discussion may be deleted by the Reviews team.
